How to Build a Pet Dental Scanner App with Google AI Studio

By Beau JohnsonΒ·Β·8 min read

Quick answer

I build a pet dental health scanner in about 30 minutes to an hour with Google AI Studio and Gemini 3.1 Pro preview. I start from a validated idea on Idea Browser, write a PRD, style the app with the Awesome Design repo, then upload a photo of my dog's teeth and get an AI analysis back.

In this video I build a pet dental health scanner from start to finish. You upload a photo of your dog's or cat's teeth, and the app flags things like tartar buildup and gum inflammation before they turn into a big vet bill. It's for non-technical builders who want a simple, repeatable way to get an MVP running in Google AI Studio in under an hour.

What I cover in this video

  • 0:00 - The finished app scans a photo of my dog's teeth and returns a full report.
  • 1:34 - Why pet dental disease hurts (a $1,200 surgery quote) and how I'd price the app at $5 a month.
  • 3:05 - The market signals: over $140 billion in pet care spending, plus search volume for dog dental care climbing since 2024.
  • 3:51 - Why I build in Google AI Studio, and why I make sure I'm on Gemini 3.1 Pro preview.
  • 5:21 - Writing the product requirements document first.
  • 6:52 - Using the Awesome Design repo so the landing page looks finished.
  • 7:37 - The full stack setup, which keeps the Gemini API key on the server.
  • 10:40 - Getting the hero feature working end to end and testing it on my own dog.

Starting with a validated idea

I'm building this one for a personal reason. Both of our cats and our dog had big dental bills recently, and we had to spend thousands getting our husky's teeth cleaned and fixed. You brush your own teeth every day and catch cavities early, but with your pet you have no idea what's going on in their mouth until the vet quotes $1,200 for dental surgery. Image models like Nano Banana are now good enough to help close that gap.

I didn't have to guess whether people want this, because I found it already researched on Idea Browser. The research lays out:

  • Pricing: $5 a month for photo analysis and health tracking. A premium tier unlocks vet chats, breed-specific monitoring and help with insurance claims.
  • Where the customers already are: Reddit's 2.8 million dog owners, holistic pet Facebook groups, and vet YouTube creators you could partner with.
  • The math: 100,000 families at $50 a year works out to $5 million in annual recurring revenue.
  • The offer: a pet health check demo as the lead magnet, then a basic plan with monthly trend reports, then a pro plan with more detailed analysis.

Setting up Google AI Studio and the PRD

I use Google AI Studio because it's the fastest and easiest way I know to get an MVP running. Before anything else, check your model. It sometimes defaults to Flash. Flash is fine, but you want the best model on offer for the build, so I switch to Gemini 3.1 Pro preview.

On Idea Browser, you click "build this idea" and it takes you to the building kit. From there, the Idea Builder sends all the context into Google AI Studio in one step: the idea research plus ready-made prompts for landing pages, marketing plans and the product requirements document.

The PRD always comes first. It's the roadmap and the vision for your product, and building without one is a lot harder. The PRD prompt opens with a role and a goal:

You are a product manager with technical specification expertise... create a comprehensive PRD that clearly defines what to build, why to build it, and how success will be measured.

I paste that into Google AI Studio. Then I copy the whole front of the idea page from Idea Browser and paste it in too. Using Wispr Flow, I add a bit of personal context by voice:

Hey, I came across this app. I want to build this web app. It sounds very interesting. It's a problem that it will solve for me and my family. And here's the initial prompt to start it off.

What the first build gave me

A few minutes later the MVP was running. Here's what it built:

  • Full stack architecture: because the app calls the Gemini API to analyze photos, it added a custom Express backend so the API key stays on the server and never shows up in the browser.
  • Health dashboard: recent scans, total snapshots taken, and a visual history of each pet's health metrics.
  • The scan tool: a photo upload that accepts drag and drop or your device camera, so it works on your phone. The image goes to the server, and Gemini 3.1 Pro preview checks it for early warning signs. It doesn't give a definitive diagnosis, and it tells you to see a vet if it's unsure.
  • Local persistence: scans and AI insights are saved in the browser's local storage.

Designing the front end and proving the hero feature

To make it look good, I use the Awesome Design repo on GitHub. It has 71,000 stars in just two months. It breaks down the typography, color schemes and design concepts of 55 popular websites, which gives the LLM more design skill for the landing page. I took the landing page prompt from Idea Builder and added this:

I want to build out the landing page in the front end for this web app. Please use this GitHub repo awesome design... I want the design to be fitting for a person who needs pet health and dental health for their dog or cat. And make it a modern style aesthetic that fits the theme and put in lots of motion.

On the first try it came back with the headline "Spot pet health issues before they become $1,200 vet bills." One photo needed fixing, so I used the edit button to generate a new one: a playful pup with a toothy smile.

An app isn't done until the hero feature works, so I asked for the whole flow:

Now, we need to make sure the hero feature works end to end that I can log in and that we can upload a photo of my dog's teeth and then we get an analysis back.

It connected the authentication gateway, dashboard, AI scanning engine and results page. The pricing section showed a Basic Tracker at $5 a month and a Pro Guardian at $15 a month. Then I uploaded a photo of my dog's teeth. The report flagged significant tartar buildup, gum inflammation and gingivitis, and potential gum recession. It strongly recommended a routine vet visit for a full oral exam.

Key takeaways

  • Start from a validated idea with pricing, an audience and search data, not a guess.
  • In Google AI Studio, check that you're on Gemini 3.1 Pro preview and not the Flash default.
  • Write the PRD first. It's the roadmap for everything that follows.
  • Point the model at the Awesome Design repo to get a polished landing page on the first pass.
  • Keep API keys on the server, and test the hero feature end to end before you call the app done.

FAQ

Which model should I use in Google AI Studio to build an app?

I use Gemini 3.1 Pro preview. Google AI Studio sometimes defaults to Flash, so check the setting and switch to the strongest model on offer before you start building.

How long does it take to build an app like this in Google AI Studio?

This pet dental scanner took me about 30 minutes to an hour, from the first prompt to a working photo analysis.

How do I keep my Gemini API key safe in a Google AI Studio app?

Build it as a full stack app. In this build, Google AI Studio added a custom Express backend, so the Gemini API key stays on the server and never shows up in the browser.

What is the Awesome Design repo?

It's a GitHub repo with 71,000 stars that breaks down the typography, color schemes and design concepts of 55 popular websites. I give the URL to the model when it builds my landing page so the design looks finished.

0:00All right, let's create a new scan by uploading a picture of our dog's teeth, run health analysis, checking for common dental issues. Oh my, we got a diagnosis. Thank you for sharing the images of your pet's mouth. Significant tartar buildup, gum inflammation, potential gum recession. Oh my goodness, we got a full report that we could take to the vet to help save us thousands of dollars. If you want to see us build this app from start to finish, check out the entire video. We used two tools that you need to be using in your daily workflow. Let's get started. The app we're going to be building today is a pet health tracking app. I'm building this because recently we went through both of our cats and our dog had extremely large dental bills. And if we

0:47were able to catch this earlier, we wouldn't have to spend thousands of dollars getting our cat and dog dental help. So, with the technology that we could use today, NanoBanana and some image models to be able to analyze the dental health of our pets could have saved me a couple grand. So, that's why we're building this app. And I found it on Idea Browser as a validated app to build. This is a common problem. Dental care for dogs and cats is a exploding market right now. And, you know, we brush our teeth every day, right? And that's what it says. You floss sometimes. You catch cavities early because you know what to look for. But for your dog or cat, you have no idea what's happening inside their mouth until the vet says it is $1,200

1:34for dental surgery. So, it's not cheap. And unless you have like some kind of pet health insurance, you're probably going to be stuck paying the thousands of dollars for the same exact thing. So, now with technology today, with AI, we can catch this and greatly reduce the dental bill for your animals, which is awesome. So, basically what I was thinking, you know, you could charge $5 a month for photo analysis and health tracking. And then the premium tier um unlocks vet chats, breed specific monitoring, insurance claim help. You grow where anxious pet parents already gather. And Reddit's 2.8 million dog owners, holistic pet Facebook groups, and veterinary of YouTube creators who've already built trust you can

2:20borrow and partner up with influencers to sell this app, which is amazing. So, this is great. Uh 100 100,000 families at $50 a year is a $5 million of annual recurring revenue business. And this is something we can build in maybe 30 minutes to an hour. So, here's the offer. The lead magnet is a pet health check demo, an interactive app demo allowing users to experience the AI-driven pet health checks with limited functionality. And then we hit them with the basic subscription plan, which is basically going to just going to provide them a basic health check features and monthly reports for pet health trends. And then we can hit them with the pro subscription, which includes much more of a detailed health analysis. Why now? Is because it says it's the perfect

3:05moment for launching a pet health scanner. As pet care spending averages and surpasses $140 billion in the whole market cap, and AI technology can revolutionize this whole industry. You know, creating an ideal convergence of market demand and technological capability. We have proof signals here, the market gap that we're filling, and the execution plan. So, this is going to be a pretty easy app to build. And you can see here on Idea Browser, it checks all the keywords that this is obviously trending in the right direction. And you know, just pet health in general, dental health care for dogs is exploding as of 2024 as far as search volume. That is kind of crazy. But yeah, let's get to building this out. We're going to build

3:51this out with Google AI Studio because it is the fastest and the easiest way to getting an MVP off the ground in just under an hour. So, we're going to be using Google AI Studio. You need to make sure that you're on Gemini 3.1 Pro preview. They are releasing a new model. I think it just dropped today, but it's not quite ready in Google AI Studio. And that's going to be amazing to work with as we just keep getting better better LMs into these into these IDEs. It's going to make our building process that much easier. But, you're going to want to want to double-check that you are on 3.1 Pro preview. Sometimes it defaults to flash, which is great, but it's You want to use the best model that they offer. So, that's what I would use to

4:36just double-check. You just go to Google AI Studio, and you're going to start building your app. What I like about Idea Browser is that say, "Hey, we like this. We like this idea." What are we going to do? You just click build this idea. That's it. And it's going to take you to the building kit. So, you can go to the AI workspace where you can research your idea, and then you can inject it straight into other IDEs. You can run AI skills, build code, and iterate on the full context of what they provide, or you can go to the idea builder, which is presented with by Google AI Studio, which is really simple. It just transfers all of the context into Google AI Studio, which is really nice. So, it comes with the ready-made prompts with the idea research already baked in, landing pages, marketing plans, product

5:21requirement documents, the whole thing, which is just so easy. I mean, building apps has never been easier, y'all. Come on, let's get it going here. Okay, so, uh first thing we're going to work on is the product requirements document. This is the road map. This is the vision to your product. And when you go into the idea builder, you can see here, um your product requirements document prompt. So, it just says, "You are a a product manager with technical specification expertise. And it says to create a comprehensive PRD that clearly defines what to build, why to build it, and how success will be measured. This is mandatory when building apps. If you don't have this, building your app is going to be that much harder. So, basically, we're just going to copy this

6:06and we're going to go into Google AI Studio. We're going to paste that in, and then we're also going This is This is just what I do. It's a little little bit easier. We're going to go into the actual idea, and we're just going to copy-paste the whole thing, the whole front of the page. Boom. And we're going to enter that as well. And that's going to be the initial prompt that we started off. We can give a little more context, like something like Here we go. I'm going to use Whisper Flow. If you don't have Whisper Flow, what are you doing? It's 2026. Easiest way to chat with LLMs. I use Whisper Flow. You can use whatever you'd like. Hey, I came across this app. I want to build this web app. It sounds very interesting. It's a problem that it will solve for me and my family. And here's the initial prompt to start it off. Boom. We're going to let it cook while we wait and see what it cooks up. We're going to iterate on some different landing page

6:52styles. Another really awesome markdown file. It's called the awesome design. This is on GitHub, and it has 71,000 stars in just 2 months. It essentially pulls 55 of the most popular websites and basically goes over the typography, the color schemes, a lot of the concepts on how these websites were built, and then can apply them to our own site. It gives it gives the LLM a little bit more skills when it comes to building out our landing page. So, this is something that we can take on as the next step. Basically, I'm just going to copy the URL and say, "Hey, use this when we build the landing page." All right. So, just took a few minutes. It built the MVP for Between Vets, focusing on clean modern interface with a robust

7:37server-side architecture to handle AI image analysis safely. And it implemented the full stack architecture. Since the app requires the Gemini API to analyze uploaded photos, it implemented a custom Express backend. This ensures the API key remains securely on the server and is never exposed in the browser. Well, that's good. Health dashboard, design a clean responsive layout showcasing recent scans, total snapshots taken, and visual history of the pets tracked health metrics. And then the scan tool itself, which is the hero feature. Otherwise, this ain't working without this. It built a photo upload interface that accepts drag and drop or device camera inputs, so you could use a use this on your phone. And

8:24the image is passed securely to the server where the Gemini 3.1 Pro preview vision model analyzes it for early warning signs without providing definitive medical diagnosis and explicitly prompts them to visit if it's unsure, which is really nice. So, very cool. Local persistence, scans and AI-generated insights are stored automatically in the browser's local storage. Awesome. Awesome. So, the app is now running. Let's build out the front end because it just went ahead and built out the dashboard. So, let's go ahead here and go back into the Idea Builder and look at the landing page. So, we can just copy the prompt. I want

9:10to build out the landing page in the front end for this web app. Please use this GitHub repo awesome design. And then we'll give the prompt. And we'll give the GitHub repo. Use this repo. I want the design to be fitting for a person who needs pet health and dental health for their dog or cat. And make it a modern style aesthetic that fits the theme and put in lots of motion. Please use that awesome design markdown file. All right, let's let it cook. Here's what it cooked up. Let's see. Let's see. This is on the first go round. Spot pet health issues before they become $1,200 vet bills. I love it. So, you brush your teeth every day, you catch cavities

9:55early, but your dog pet health shouldn't be guessing game you lose. Analyze teeth, eye, skin instantly with AI. That's awesome. You don't have to fix that photo right there, though. Very cool. Very cool. Awesome. Awesome. Now, let's go back. Let's go click this little edit button. We want to use make changes with the editor. Yeah, there we go. Playful pup with a toothy smile. Let's go. Generating. All right, cool. So, awesome. So, the whole hero feature of the product, right? In my vision is that you upload a photo of your animal's teeth and it analyzes it and gives you feedback whether you need to go see a dentist now or not. So, let's see. Let's complete that flow from end to end. Awesome. Thank you. Now, we need to make

10:40sure the hero feature works end to end that I can log in and that we can upload a photo of my dog's teeth and then we get an analysis back. All right, cool. It says, "I've implemented the complete end to end flow you requested. Everything from the landing page to the analysis engine is now fully functional and connected. Here's the overview. We have an authentication gateway, application dashboard, AI scanning engine, and results presentation. You can now click through the preview window, try signing in, upload a test photo of a pet, and watch the diagnosis engine in action. Awesome." All right, so it updated the hero section, which looks really good. Awesome. So, basic

11:25trackers $5 a month and then the pro guardian is 15 a month. Awesome. Let's see. Let's get started. All right, here's the dashboard. Let's see, we could start a new scan. Upload this photo that I have. Okay, amazing. The end result is we uploaded a photo of our dog's teeth and we got an amazing analysis. It says, "Thank you for sharing these images of your pet's mouth. I understand you're looking for insights into their oral health." And look at this, there's significant tartar buildup, obviously, and there is a noticeable amount of yellowish-brown buildup and the teeth are rotting. There's gum inflammation, there's gingivitis, there's potential gum recession. Then it gives you a recommendation. "Given the extent of the tartar buildup and gum inflammation visible, I strongly recommend you

12:11schedule a routine vet visit for a comprehensive oral examination." So, this is something that I went through personally over this last month. We've had to spend thousands of dollars getting our husky's teeth cleaned and fixed. So, this is something that, you know, people can catch this early and not have to spend thousands of dollars. So, that's amazing. I'm starting to build apps that are solving my worldly everyday problems and you should really check out these tools down below. Number one being Idea Browser and number two being Google AI Studio. Play around with them, start iterating. I mean, what? We spent 30 minutes building this app and I mean, what's 30 minutes? Start building today. Come on now.
